The Sullivan County Historical and Genealogical Society
was created in July 1996 at Blountville, Tennessee.
Our
Mission Statement
The Sullivan
County Historical and Genealogical Society is dedicated
to the preservation of history and genealogy in Sullivan
County, Tennessee and surrounding areas of East Tennessee
and Southwest Virginia.
History
of the organization
The group was
initially organized as the Sullivan County Genealogy
Club under the direction of
Shelia Hunt at her residence, with 25 people in attendance.
Charter members included Les
Bright, Larry Robertson, Jan Combs, Kay Hamrick, Craig
Miller, Mike Poe, Jerry Sharrett, Fred Wagner, Nancy
Christian, and Shelia Hunt. The society's first
Board of Officers included Les
Bright, President; Larry Robertson; Vice President;
Peggy Ferrell, Secretary; Betty Orfield, Treasurer;
and Barbara Ray, Corresponding Secretary.
During the following
year, the organization appointed a chartering committee
comprised of Ken Breeding, Jan Combs, Bobbie Derrick,
Charlene Derrick, Earl Feathers, Shelia Hunt, Joyce
Loving, and Barbara Ray. The committee developed
by-laws for the organization, which was officially
chartered as the Sullivan County Genealogical Society
on July 11, 1997. Over the course of the following
year, the society rapidly grew into a larger organization
with some 50-65 people in attendance at most of the
meetings.
In
2008
The Sullivan
County Historical and Genealogical Society is currently
an even larger organization comprised of many members
across the U.S. Its meetings are held at 7:00 p.m.
on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Sullivan
County Courthouse located in historic downtown Blountville.
The society publishes a semiannual journal of historical
and genealogical information which is available and
free of charge to its members.
The Sullivan
County Historical and Genealogical Society is proud
of its continuing growth. We are grateful for the
many people who have been instrumental in helping
our organization get off to a good start. We cordially
invite you to join our organization in the interests
of preserving local history and genealogy. We hope
to see you at the meetings!
