We Support the Sullivan County Archiveshttp://www.sullivancountyarchives.com/
The Sullivan County Historical & Genealogical Society is proud to be in partnership with the Sullivan County Archives, which is the parent home of our society. Supported by volunteers from SCHGS, the Archives also houses numerous and sundry early records including:

Will and probate records from 1830-2001
Marriages from 1863-1999
Chancery suits from circa 1850-1950
Tax records from circa 1850-1950
Death Records beginning in 1908
Old maps and microfilms
Various ledger books & special collections

Additionally, the Sullivan County Archives has a library section dedicated to county histories, family histories, civic and community histories. The Archives also houses a massive vertical file comprised of thousands of surname files, regional histories and research guides. The Sullivan County Archives continues to collect documents and artifacts of historical and genealogical nature in the east Tennessee and Southwest Virginia area, and other regions across the U.S.http://www.sullivancountyarchives.com/

"SCHGS goes to School..."

The Sullivan County Historical and Genealogical Society feels that our children are our greatest asset and we want to do our part in helping them to establish family values while enjoying a delightful learning experience.

Thus, we have designed a hands-on exercise and program to assist our young people in exploring the roots of their ancestry while obtaining the reward of possessing detailed documentation for their immediate pleasure and as a historical impact for generations to come.

Hopefully this project will enhance quality interaction of family members that will also become involved and share in the rewards of the student’s efforts.

During the month of February, SCHGS visited all Middle Schools and High Schools in Sullivan Co., TN and presented our School Genealogy Project Package consisting of all necessary research tools to outline and assist in a project of discovering family history. SCHGS will furnish each participating class with ample quantities of forms, charts, detailed research aids and guides.

We are also offering class group and individual tours of the Sullivan County Archives.

Although this program has been presented in our home base of Sullivan County, we will happily make the same project available to school classes anywhere. Please contact us by mail, by telephone (423) 323-4660 or through our website
